Călăraşi

Origin
A Clone-tree aged 60 years, grown from seeds, was found on a spot near the house of an owner named Lavrienco living in Hârjauca Village, Călăraşi District in 1964, being registered in 1980.

Variety Characteristics
The tree grows up rapidly, is resistant to frost, droughts and pests. In years with cold springs and chilly summers it could be slightly affected by bacteria Xanthamonos juglandis, Gnomonia leptostyla (the leaves become brownish (anthracnose)). It is blooming in medium periods, the male flowers start blooming 5-6 days earlier than female flowers. The harvest is rich and constant.

Tree
At the age of 40 years the tree reaches the height of 15 m, shaping a high and straight trunk, the bark being coloured in grey.
Crown – spherical, voluminous, with abundant leafage.
Scaffold branches – long, dense, shaping large angles relative to the trunk.
Offshoots – long, relatively thick, circular of brown-green colour.
Leaves – relatively large, glossy, of light-green colour.

Fruit
Size – large, on the average: Н = 42 mm, D = 37,0 mm, D = 40,0 mm, the fruit average weight > 15 grams.
Shape – large oval, the base slightly round, the top is barely sharp, cross-section almost circular. The aperture of the stalk is relatively large, with well-clustered fascicules.
Endocarp – relatively thick, but shutters easily, the surface is yellow-brown coloured, having small humps and slots.
Kernel – large, it can be easily separated from the shell.
Maturity/Harvest – second decade of September.
